The diary, which contains detailed notes and at the same time serves as a reflection, is a unique personal document for the European's view of Japan in the 1930s. After the architectural "discoveries" that Taut had been able to make the previous year, he now reflects on their world significance, reads numerous books, and, beyond the great architectural works of art, gets to know the farmhouse and the villages around Kyôto, Sendai, and Takasaki. His first book on Japan is so successful that it sees its second edition in the same year. In May 1934, Taut visits the imperial villa Katsura for the second time and records his observations in an album of 28 sketches. He begins his second book, "Art in Japan," in which he presents encounters with the great artists of the decorative arts in their workshops and with Japanese painting. His advisory work is educational, his practice aims to be a model, his writings are intended to help develop analysis and critical faculties. From August 1934, Taut became a designer of utilitarian objects and furniture for the workshops in Takasaki, with 200 designs and many models in the first five months.
