Beschreibung
Comic novelist and critic Paul McDonald explores the philosophy of humour in a book that will appeal to philosophers and creative writers alike. One aim of this book is to assess theories of humour and laughter. It concentrates mainly on philosophical approaches to humour- including those of Plato, Aristotle, Cicero, Descartes, Hobbes, Bergson, Kant, Schopenhauer, Kierkegaard, Freud and Bakhtin, but also explores such fields as cultural studies, literary theory, religion, psychoanalysis, and psychology; this broad focus makes for a richer account of humour, its relationship with philosophical thought, and its bearing on the human condition. Readers are invited to engage in creative writing exercises designed to exploit this crucial facet of humour, and to help them explore relevant issues imaginatively. In this way they will deepen their understanding of those issues, whilst at the same time cultivating their own creative skills.

Über den Autor
When Paul McDonald walked onto the USC campus as a freshman quarterback he was ninth on the depth chart. He started as a 9th Stringer! To make matters worse, Vince Evans, the Trojans starting quarterback was stronger, faster, bigger, and could throw the ball waaaaay further than Paul. "If that is what it means to be a quarterback at USC I have no chance," was racing through Paul's mind. Paul went from this humble position at USC to becoming a starter on the Trojans national championship football team, an All-American quarterback, and an eight year career in the NFL. How did Paul do it? He discovered his own path to becoming the best quarterback he could be and not someone else's version of one. Paul spent countless hours in the film room to elevate himself into being a top level cerebral quarterback, which led him to Rose Bowl triumphs and the opportunity to play in the NFL for the Cleveland Browns and Dallas Cowboys.Paul's journey provided him with the thrill of running through NFL football stadiums, but he was also forced to make the rough transition to sitting in a corporate office cubicle. This path led to some unhappy times for Paul until he discovered the secrets of diving inward to find the things in life that he truly loved, even at the same job that he previously disliked. His story provides great hope to people struggling with being at a place in life that lacks purpose and joy.
