Beschreibung

A local community study of tense relations between an established group and outsiders becomes a microcosm that illuminates a range of sociological configurations. The Established and the Outsiders examines the mechanisms of stigmatization, monopolization of power, collective fantasy and `we' and `they' images which support and reinforce divisions in society.

Über den Autor

The late Norbert Elias′ work ranged across societies of all types and historical eras and transcended disciplinary boundaries. Among the many original features of his work was a committment to sociology as a historical science examining long-term developmental processes. His books include The Civilizing Process, The Court Society, What is Sociology and The Symbol Theory (Sage, 1991).

The late John L Scotson was a lecturer at Lougborough College of Further Education.
