It is a well-known fact that rituals, as well as religious genres such as the oratorio, were crucial in the propagandistic representation of the Nazi-regime. As a result, one might be surprised to find ritual forms within the dramatic works of authors such as Bertolt Brecht, Max Frisch, Friedrich Dürrenmatt, Nelly Sachs, Peter Weiss, Rolf Hochhuth and Peter Handke. These authors, in defaulting to similar aesthetics as used within a system they all renounced, placed themselves under fire for doing exactly that. So why would they take such a risk, politically as well as aesthetically? One reason is the productive aesthetic of the ritual itself. By frequenting ritual forms, theatre between 1945 and the 1960s could establish itself as a provocative successor to the established theatrical conventions as well as amplify theatrical and artistic forms. In a detailed analysis of the authors' works, Saskia Fischer shows the complex interrelations of drama and ritual and evolves a concept of reflected poetical rituality.
Rituale und religiöse Gattungen wie das Oratorium spielten für die politischen Inszenierungen der Nationalsozialisten eine zentrale Rolle. Dies ist bekannt. Umso erstaunlicher ist es, dass ausgerechnet im deutschsprachigen Drama nach 1945 rituell-sakrale Formen intensiv verwendet wurden. Bertolt Brecht, Max Frisch, Friedrich Dürrenmatt, Nelly Sachs, Peter Weiss, Rolf Hochhuth und Peter Handke, die das Nachkriegsdrama entscheidend geprägt haben, riskierten dadurch den Vorwurf, an die ritualisierte nationalsozialistische Ästhetik anzuschließen. Das aber wollten sie gerade nicht. Warum also gingen sie dieses ästhetische und politische Risiko überhaupt ein? Saskia Fischer nimmt in differenzierten Einzelanalysen die komplexe Wechselbeziehung von Drama und Ritual in den Blick und entwickelt dabei ein Konzept reflektierter poetischer Ritualität.
