Platelet Rich Plasma in Orthopaedics, Sports Medicine and Maxillofacial Surgery includes numerous contributions detailing the current use of PRPs in clinical practice. From the origins in oral and maxillofacial surgery, to the latest advances in orthopaedics and sports medicine including the use of Platelet Rich Growth Factors (PRGF) in muscle, bone, tendon, ligament and nerve injuries, this book provides a wide scope of the topic. The volume concludes with chapters from experts in biology, orthopaedics, oral and maxillofacial surgery, where the convergence of expertise is leading to unprecedented insights into how to minutely control the invivo fate and function of PRGF. This book will provide a useful resource for physicians and researchers interested in learning more about this rapidly growing area of biomedical treatment.

Eduardo Anitua, MD, DDS, PhD is Director of the Instituto Eduardo Anitua, Vitoria, Spain. He has lectured at more than 500 courses and conferences on implants, prosthesis, dental aesthetics and tissue regeneration in Spain and abroad in Europe, United States, South America and Asia. In addition to lecturing, he has authored and co-authored more than 10 books and book chapters and more than 100 research and review articles in National and International journals including TRENDS, PPAD, JOMI, JOI, Clinic, Oral Implant Research, Thrombosis and Haemostasis.
Ramón Cugat, MD is a Specialist in Orthopaedic Surgery and Traumatology at Hospital Quirón, Barcelona, Spain. He is Associate Professor at the Faculty of Medicine of the University of Barcelona and the Universidad CEU Cardenal Herrera Valencia, as well as co-director of the Chair of Medicine and Regenerative Surgery created in 2013 by the Garcia Cugat Foundation and the Universidad CEU Cardenal Herrera Valencia. He also belongs tothe international team of faculty of the International Society of Arthroscopy, Knee Surgery and Orthopaedic Sports Meidcine (ISAKOS).Mikel Sanchez, MD is scientific director and medical Unit Arthroscopic Surgery (UCA) of Vithas Hospital San José, Vitoria-Gasteiz. In addition to the UCA, he was the founder of the first unit Biological Therapy (UTB) in Vitoria-Gasteiz. His scientific merits include his pioneering work in the advancement of arthroscopic surgery in Spain and Europe, and being the first physician to understand the therapeutic potential of growth factors in the different diseases of the locomotor system, along with developing protocols for its application in traumatology.
Part 1. Basic science.- Platelets: at the interface between inflammation and repair process.- Characterization of plasma rich in growth factor: content and formulation.- Effects of PRGF on cells and tissues of musculoskeletal system: from muscle to articular cartilage.- Regeneration: connecting the dots among hemostasis and clotting, immune system, and fibrogenesis.- PRGF molecular intervention to enhance muscle perfusion and tissue remodeling.- Part 2. Oral and Maxillofacial surgery.- The use of plasma rich in growth factor in the treatment of post-extraction defects.- Efficacy and safety of PRGF versus platelet rich fibrin in post-extraction defects.- An autologous treatment to a challenging pathology medication-related osteonecrosis of the jaw. Part 3. Orthopaedics & Sports Medicine.- A biological approach to apply plasma rich in growth factors on joint tissues.- Scientific evidence of the effects of PRGF on musculoskeletal tissues in animal model.- A new approach to treat jointand cartilage injuries: intraosseous infiltrations of PRGF.- Knee Osteoarthritis: one versus two cycles of PRGF infiltrations treatment.- Application of PRGF on Sports-related injuries.- Why to use Plasma rich in growth factors on the repair of damaged tendons.- Infiltrations of PRGF to treat ligament injuries.- Treatment of injured peripheral nerves with PRGF: from bench to patient.- Treatment of tendinopathies with Plasma rich in growth factors.- Intradiscal and intra-articular facet infiltrations with plasma rich in growth factors to treat chronic low back pain.
