What holds societies together when crises multiply-and what causes them to come apart? The answer proposed here is simple yet overlooked: beneath political and economic stability lies a deeper reality-the logistics that keep societies running. Across three movements, the book first examines conditions enabling circulation under constraint-standardization, coordination, and material organization. It then turns to moments of rupture, when systems reconfigure and reveal forms of adaptation, redundancy, and invention often obscured by stability. Finally, it analyzes power, showing how control of flows produces hierarchy, dependency, and long-lasting asymmetries. Fifteen case studies across diverse historical contexts show that logistical dimensions are never neutral: they actively shape the societies they sustain. Written for students, researchers, practitioners, and readers interested in the "hidden infrastructures of history," the book offers an original lens on historical transformations and contemporary fragilities, reframing logistics as a central force informing past events and present-day vulnerabilities.
