There is a clear gap in the market for a survey text on leadership theory that is interdisciplinary, designed for use with college students, and grounded in social justice. Existing texts tend to be bound to a single discipline, such as business or psychology, lack the critical perspective necessary to fully understand the justice orientation central to many contemporary leadership theories, and omit important theories designed to teach leadership at the postsecondary level. The Second Edition of Leadership Theory: Cultivating Critical Perspectives addresses each of these issues, making it the only leadership textbook comprehensive enough for standalone use in courses and leadership programs.

This survey text examines a wide range of leadership theories and applications, using critical social theory as a framework that allows for an emphasis on social justice. The book discusses the evolving nature of leadership and guides readers as they apply their learning through a critical social theory lens.

These narratives are drawn from across industries and career fields, but they all highlight individuals who are deeply engaged in the work of leadership for social justice. JOHN P. DUGAN is the Chief Research & Development Officer at the Center for Expanding Leadership & Opportunity. John co-founded and is the principal investigator of Multi-Institutional Study of Leadership (MSL), the largest international study of leadership outcomes. He also co-authored The Handbook for Student Leadership Development.
