Starke Bereiche der gegenwärtigen Philosophie stehen unter dem Zeichen des "embodiment". So vielversprechend diese pragmatische Wende auch wirkt, so begrenzt bleibt sie darin, die Welt als Projektion des erkennenden Ich zu deuten. Der Image Act erschließt dagegen die entgegenkommende Kraft der bildhaften Formen. Das Buch nimmt eine dreifache Gliederung dieser Sphäre vor: Die Nachahmung, die Substitution und die pure Formwirkung. Alle drei Bereiche werden durch Beispiele von der Antike bis in die Gegenwart und bis in die Bilderkämpfe unserer Zeit geführt. Aus dieser Rekonstruktion des Agierens der Bilder entsteht das Element einer neuen Philosophie des Entgegenkommens.
