Beschreibung
The true story of Fauja Singh, who broke world records to become the first one hundred-year-old to run a marathon, shares valuable lessons on the source of his grit, determination to overcome obstacles, and commitment to positive representation of the Sikh community.

Every step forward is a victory.

Fauja Singh was born determined. He was also born with legs that wouldn't allow him to play cricket with his friends or carry him to school miles from his village in Punjab. But that didn't stop him. Working on his family's farm, Fauja grew stronger to meet his own full potential.

He never stopped striving. At the age of 81, after a lifetime of making his body, mind, and heart stronger, Fauja decided to run his first marathon. He went on to break records all around the world and became the first person over 100 to complete the grueling long-distance race.

With exuberant text by Simran Jeet Singh and exhilarating illustrations by Baljinder Kaur, the true story of Fauja Singh reminds us that it's both where we start and how we finish that make our journeys unforgettable.

Zusammenfassung
MESSAGE OF PERSEVERANCE: Back matter includes inspirational quotes from Fauja Singh, like "With every step, I get closer to the finish line," that complement his story and help affirm young readers in cultivating their own willpower.

Nicknamed the Turbaned Tornado, Fauja Singh's story is well known and will especially appeal to the MARATHON COMMUNITY.

FOR READERS WHO LOVE illustrated biographies about tenacious figures, like Between the Lines: How Ernie Barnes Went from the Football Field to the Art Gallery by Sandra Neil Wallace and Malala's Magic Pencil by Malala Yousafzai.

TACKLES AGEISM: This book counters the stereotype that only the young can be mentally and physically strong, as Fauja broke the world record at one hundred years old and started training well into his eighties.

This book SUBTLY ADDRESSES RACISM and provides a MUCH-NEEDED MIRROR, as the Sikh community has experienced a surge in hate violence since 9/11.

WELL-CONNECTED AUTHOR: Simran Jeet Singh is a Sikh author, scholar, and activist deeply involved in his community, and with a Twitter following of over 70,000, he brings with him an invested interest in his work and his speaking engagements.

IMMERSIVE, ENGAGING ART: Baljinder Kaur's use of painterly watercolors, beautiful patterns, and fluid line drawing will pull readers-young and old-into Fauja Singh's story.

WE NEED DIVERSE BOOKS: Fulfills Kokila's mission of centering stories from the margins, celebrating the full range of authors' experiences, and answering the call for more diverse children's literature.
