Joanne McEachen is the CEO/Founder of The Learner First. I created The Learner First to support the education system in making sense of what works and what doesn't by interrogating the system through the eyes of the learner. Our team supports schools and districts as they design what works for each individual learner, and for all people within the system.
My experience spans all layers of the education system: as a teacher, principal, Superintendent, a whole system leader at the New Zealand Ministry of Education. I have firsthand experience with the issues that schools, districts, and education departments face and can provide crystal clarity in finding the right solutions within the system itself.
I am also the Global New Measures Director for New Pedagogies for Deep Learning (NPDL), and have had the opportunity to work around the world to transform learning and design and implement major realignments in education. I have worked with countries including the United States, Australia, Canada, the Netherlands, Finland, Uruguay, and New Zealand. I led the design of and co-authored NPDL's Suite of Tools.
I have written four books, multiple white and working papers, and have had the opportunity to be a speaker across the globe. Through all of this work, I relentlessly focus on connecting people at an authentic level and working alongside systems to drive meaningful outcomes for all learners.
Our work is powerful, and to be sustainable, change must be done with the people, for the people and by the people. By understanding each other as human beings, we can build cohesive school and system change processes, creating an inclusive space to dig deeply into underlying beliefs so we can affect genuine change for the learners who need it.
