From 1984 until 1986 he was saiing as 2nd Officer on various types of ships. In 1986 he received his Master's Licence and was sailing as Chief Officer and Master on Reefer ships, Product Tanker, Bulk Carrier, Heavy Lift ships and Container ships up to 6000 TEU
From 1999 until 2012 he was Managing Director of the Training Center Emsstrom in Leer. Since 2013 Capt. Grunau is working as a Marine and Training Consultant.
