This book is the first comprehensive cross-language survey of grammatical voice and its manifestations. Voice is a verbal category expressing the relationship between the verb and a set of nominal positions in a sentence or other structure. Despite its intricacy and cross-linguistic diversity, most grammarians have hitherto treated voice in terms of particular categories, such as the passive, which may not occur in all languages. Professor Klaiman's threefold classification of voice types enlarges present conceptions of voice and contributes significantly to current research in this highly complex area.
