What began as an unforeseen local clean-up in Utrecht became, through Wilsma's statements and an overzealous court, a nationwide manhunt and a wave of hysteria. Gerrit Jan Wielinga (b. 1971, Leeuwarden) is a writer, artist and campaigner. He devised Purple Friday, the Netherlands' national day of LGBTQ+ solidarity in schools, and is a co-founder of Bi+ Nederland. Previously he worked as a barman in Amsterdam's gay bars and acted in seedy German porn films. Today he lives with his cat on an island in Amsterdam. He writes for several publications.
