Beschreibung
What We Carry is a book for those who have coped. Who have held it together. Who have carried responsibility, pressure, and other people's needs for years, often without language for what that has cost.
When the sudden death of a close friend affected him more deeply than he expected, Matt Wilks began to question the habits of endurance that had sustained life and family through decades of military service. Needing space to think, he began walking.
Framed by three Caminos and other walked landscapes in Jerusalem, Portugal, and Galicia, What We Carry moves between life on the road and the reflections that arise from it: grief and stress, faith and doubt, the expectations we place upon ourselves, and the habits and reflexes that once helped us endure but may no longer be fit for purpose.
Warm, thoughtful and quietly humorous, What We Carry offers recognition and language for experiences often left unnamed. It does not claim that what has been carried can simply be set down. Instead, it suggests that what has been borne for a long time can, with awareness, be carried differently, opening a steadier way forward.

Über den Autor
Having qualified as a primary school teacher, Matt Wilks elected to take a three-year commission in the British Army, and thenrather forgot to leave. What followed was a further thirty-three years in [...] most long military careers there was the usual 'free travel' around the globe, some of it glamorous, some of it to countriesthat most wouldn't consider to be holiday [...] of his time was spent in close-support artillery roles - the branch of the Army responsible for providing firepower indirect support of troops on the ground - punctuated by spells in counter-insurgency and peacekeeping infantry work, as well asa variety of staff and training [...] recently retired, the plan is simple: reconnect with friends, ski for as long as the body allows, and walk as many Caminos astime permits.
