A pioneer of the science fiction genre, as well as a prominent figure in the Realism and Naturalism literary movements, he was one of the first American authors to become internationally known and earn considerable wealth from his writing. His most notable books include 'The Call of the Wild' (1903) and 'White Fang' (1906). He was a member of San Francisco's radical literary group The Crowd and was a passionate animal rights activist.
