Air has an existential significance for all forms of life in the world. It is everywhere, albeit invisible and evanescent; it is literally impalpable. While until now in everyday life we have taken air for granted, in current political and social discourses air appears as a central element: during the corona crisis, we wear face masks to protect others from the air we breathe out; scientists are investigating the role of aerosols in the transmission of the COVID-19 virus, and climate activists fight for clean air and hence against climate change. The depiction of air has been one of the artistic challenges at least since the Renaissance. As a material, however, air is a relatively recent ­phenomenon in art. The artists of Modernism strived for the artistic appropriation of the world
as well as its dissolution and transformation. It therefore only seems logical that they regarded air not only as an idea, but also as a material. Air was no longer depicted merely as wind, clouds, fog, steam, smoke, or breath, but has been deliberately used as a material. Thus it has been both a medium of expression as well as a subject in the visual, applied and performing arts since then. The ­exhibition and the accompanying book focus on air as an artistic material and as a carrier of forms and ideas in the visual arts. The works on display, just like the material they all share, are sometimes expansive, sometimes minimal or even invisible, solid as well as ephemeral, they are located ­indoors as well as outdoors. The art works storm, whisper, blow, evaporate, breathe, and float.

Alors que jusqu à présent nous avons considéré l air comme une évidence dans notre vie quotidienne, il semble aujourd hui devenir un élément central des discours politiques et sociaux : en pleine crise du corona, nous portons des masques sur la bouche et le nez pour protéger les autres de notre haleine, les scientifiques étudient le rôle des aérosols dans la transmission du virus du covid-19 et les militants pour le climat luttent pour un air plus pur qui puisse encore sauver le monde. La représentation de l air est, au plus tard depuis la Renaissance, un défi pour les artistes. L air en tant que matériau en revanche est un phénomène relativement récent dans l art. Depuis l époque moderne, les créateurs aspirent à s approprier artistiquement le monde, à en dépasser les limites et à le transformer. Il semble donc logique, par conséquent, qu ils ne se soient pas cantonnés à l air en tant que seule idée, mais aussi en tant que matériau. L air n est plus désormais représenté uniquement sous forme de vent, de nuages, de brume, de vapeur ou d haleine, il est délibérément utilisé comme un média en soi. Il apparaît désormais comme un moyen d expression et un sujet à la fois dans les arts plastiques, les arts appliqués et les arts du spectacle. L exposition et le livre qui l accompagne placent l air au centre en tant que matériau artistique et support de formes et d idées dans l art plastique. Les oeuvres présentées sont, de même que le matériau qu elles ont toutes en commun, parfois de la taille de la pièce, parfois minuscules, voire invisibles, solides et éphémères, intérieures et extérieures. L art se déchaîne, halète, vente, souffle, se volatilise, respire, murmure et flotte.

Während wir Luft im alltäglichen Leben bisher als etwas Selbstverständliches betrachtet haben, erscheint sie in politisch-gesellschaftlichen ­Diskursen zurzeit als problemverursachendes Element: In der ­Corona-Krise tragen wir Mund-und-Nasen-Schutz, um andere vor unserer Atemluft zu schützen, ­Wissenschaftler:innen unter­suchen, welche Rolle Aerosole bei der Übertragung des Covid-19-Virus spielen, und Klimaaktivist:innen kämpfen für saubere Luft, um die Welt noch zu ­retten. Die Darstellung von Luft gehört spätestens seit der Renaissance zu den künstlerischen ­Herausforderungen. Luft als Werkstoff ­hingegen ist ein relativ junges ­Phänomen in der Kunst. Seit der Moderne streben Künstler:innen die künstlerische Aneignung der Welt wie auch ihre Entgrenzung und Transformation an. Es erscheint deshalb nur folgerichtig, dass sie sich der Luft nicht nur als Idee, sondern auch als Material zuwandten. Luft wird nicht mehr nur als Wind, Wolken, Nebel, Dampf, Rauch oder Atem abgebildet, sondern ­bewusst als Medium eingesetzt. Seither tritt Luft als Ausdrucksmittel und Thema zugleich in den ­bildenden, angewandten und darstellenden Künsten in Erscheinung. Im Fokus der Ausstellung und des begleitenden ­Buches steht Luft als künstlerisches Material und als Träger von Formen und Ideen in der bildenden Kunst. Die ausgestellten Werke sind, genauso wie das Material, das ihnen allen gemeinsam ist, mal raumgreifend, mal minimal oder gar unsichtbar, ­solide wie ephemer, ­drinnen wie draußen positioniert. Die Kunst stürmt, haucht, weht, pustet, verfliegt, atmet, säuselt und schwebt.
