Beschreibung
This edition of Voltaire's political writings presents a varied selection of his most interesting and controversial texts, many of which have not previously been translated into English. They range over the nature and legitimacy of political power, law and the social order, crime and punishment, liberty and humanity, war and peace, and the growing disorder in the French economy. They also touch on specific issues and events in pre-Revolutionary France to which Voltaire responded and in which he was closely involved, including the Seven Years' War and relations with Frederick II, the Genevan quarrels of the 1760s, and the sensational trials of Jean Calas, Sirven and the Chevalier de La Barre. A comprehensive introduction explores the background to these texts, which together reflect the full range of Voltaire's responses to the most significant issues of his time.

Über den Autor
Voltaire was the pen name of François-Marie Arouet (1694-1778), a French writer, philosopher, dramatist, historian, poet, polemicist, and one of the central figures of the Enlightenment. Born in Paris and educated by Jesuits, he became famous for his wit, literary ambition, attacks on intolerance, and repeated clashes with political and religious authority. His career included imprisonment in the Bastille, exile in England, patronage by aristocrats and monarchs, and a long life of extraordinary productivity.Voltaire wrote across nearly every major literary form of his age: plays, philosophical tales, histories, poems, essays, letters, criticism, and polemical works. His best-known writings include Candide, Letters Concerning the English Nation, Zadig, Micromegas, The Philosophical Dictionary, The Age of Louis XIV, and numerous tragedies and dramatic works. His writing helped popularize Enlightenment ideals of reason, religious toleration, civil liberty, skepticism toward dogma, and resistance to cruelty and fanaticism.Although modern readers often know Voltaire mainly as a satirist and philosopher, he was also one of the most prominent dramatists of eighteenth-century France. His plays drew on classical models, historical subjects, political conflict, religious tension, and moral crisis, reflecting both his literary ambitions and his lifelong concern with power and justice. His influence extended across European literature, political thought, religious criticism, and the development of modern secular intellectual culture.
