Mainz, Germany, 1993. Everyone back home says Ifeoma is the lucky one.

She is twenty-seven, six months pregnant, and has just left Nigeria with her one-year-old son to join her husband, a visiting lecturer at a German university. The better life is supposed to start now.

Instead there is a one-bedroom flat, a language she cannot speak, and a city where strangers stare at her in every shop. Her husband, Ugochukwu, is finding his feet and wants to stay. Ifeoma is counting the days. When her baby is born, her mother is thousands of miles away, and the omugwo every Igbo daughter is promised never comes.

Zelda Wolf, a German lecturer, has been asked to help the Nigerian family settle in. She has not spoken to her own daughter in two years because of the man that daughter chose to marry. Helping the Odogwus will force her to look at what she has been refusing to see.

Over one long year, two women on opposite sides of the same prejudice must each decide what home is, and what they are willing to lose to keep it.

Inspired by the author's own family history, Torn Between Homes is a tender and sharply observed novel about migration, marriage, and motherhood far from home. It is a japa story from before the word existed, and a rich choice for book clubs.

"A poignant and deeply human novel... a hauntingly beautiful story of migration and one woman's search for home." NewInBooks
