Beschreibung
Something is moving through the remote Vermont hills, and the truth about it reaches far beyond Earth.
Folklore professor Albert N. Wilmarth is skeptical when strange bodies are reportedly discovered after devastating floods in rural Vermont. Then he begins corresponding with Henry Akeley, an isolated farmer who insists that the old mountain legends are real. Photographs, recordings, and increasingly desperate letters provide evidence of unnatural beings operating in the wilderness-and suggest that Akeley himself is being watched.
When Akeley's frightened correspondence suddenly changes and he invites Wilmarth to visit, curiosity proves stronger than caution. The journey into the Vermont mountains leads Wilmarth toward a horrifying confrontation with alien intelligence, forbidden knowledge, and technology capable of carrying the human mind across unimaginable distances. The deeper he investigates, the less certain he becomes that humanity understands its own world.
Part of the Cthulhu Mythos, The Whisperer in Darkness connects the cosmic terror of The Call of Cthulhu and The Dunwich Horror with the alien science and vast universe explored in At the Mountains of Madness. Combining rural isolation, mounting paranoia, extraterrestrial horror, and Lovecraft's vision of humanity as a tiny presence in an incomprehensibly ancient cosmos, it remains one of the central works of Lovecraftian horror.

Über den Autor
H. P. Lovecraft (1890-1937) was an American writer of horror, science fiction, fantasy, and weird fiction whose work became one of the foundations of modern cosmic horror. Born in Providence, Rhode Island, Lovecraft created stories in which human beings confront an immense and ancient universe filled with forces that challenge conventional ideas about history, science, religion, and humanity's place in [...] of Lovecraft's fiction forms an interconnected world later known as the Cthulhu Mythos. Stories such as The Call of Cthulhu, The Dunwich Horror, The Whisperer in Darkness, and The Shadow Over Innsmouth share forbidden books, secret histories, recurring New England locations, alien races, cults, and glimpses of entities whose existence threatens human sanity. Other major works, including The Colour Out of Space, At the Mountains of Madness, The Shadow Out of Time, and The Case of Charles Dexter Ward, expanded his distinctive combination of supernatural horror and speculative science.Lovecraft published principally in pulp magazines and achieved relatively little commercial success during his lifetime. His reputation grew enormously after his death as writers, publishers, filmmakers, artists, and game designers rediscovered and expanded upon his fictional universe. Today the term "Lovecraftian" is widely used to describe horror involving cosmic insignificance, forbidden knowledge, incomprehensible beings, and the terrifying possibility that reality is far stranger than humanity imagines.
