Nine syllables. Nine hand seals. Seventeen hundred years.
Before you were, the syllables were. Kuji-in, "the nine-syllable seals," is a Japanese meditation done with the hands: fingers woven into a seal, a syllable spoken into the dark, the mind gathered on one intention. In the moment hand, voice, and mind fold into one, something rare occurs - awareness turns and looks at itself. Nine such seals form a single stair, rising from standing firm in the world to, at last, vanishing from it. This is not magic thrown at the universe. It is consciousness learning its own shape, one gesture at a time.
Every gesture carries a history longer than any single life. This one began as a spell in a Daoist manual of fourth-century China, whispered before entering the mountains - but it was Japan that made it what it is. Carried across the sea, it entered the mikkyo of Kukai, took on the grammar of Japanese esoteric Buddhism, and was assembled in the fire and cold water of Shugendo, the mountain religion of the yamabushi. Only at the far end of that road did it reach the battlefield and the movie screen, where the ninja legend most people know today was born. The legend is the last echo. This book returns to the first sound.
This opening volume of The Way of Kuji follows the nine syllables - rin, pyo, to, sha, kai, jin, retsu, zai, zen - down through every layer of their inheritance, and asks a quieter question than the legends ever dare: what actually happens to attention, and to consciousness itself, when a person forms these seals? What the tradition claims and what modern psychology observes are set side by side, without adjudication, like two lamps lighting the same hand.
Part history, part philosophy, part practice manual, the book gives you both the history and the method: where each seal comes from, what has been said of it across the centuries, and a complete, step-by-step way to practice - culminating in a sixty-three-day program that asks for no temple, no teacher, no equipment. Only your own two hands, and the willingness to sit down with yourself.
Faithful to the record, it separates what the sources transmit from what they leave unsaid, marks tradition as tradition and reconstruction as reconstruction, and never sells certainty it cannot support. What remains, after the legends are set aside, is stranger and more beautiful than the legends: nine ordinary gestures by which a mind, for seventeen hundred years, has practiced becoming aware of itself.
For anyone drawn to meditation, mudra, esoteric Buddhism, Shugendo, Japanese spirituality, or the true history behind the ninja's nine cuts - this is where the way begins.

Lido Migo was born in South Korea and has been teaching oriental medicine and therapy since 2007 in various countries and schools, leading more than twenty international seminars and workshops. At the center of his work is the study of meditation and the evolution of consciousness - how contemplative practice reshapes attention, perception, and the felt structure of the mind, and how the states it opens mark successive stages in the growth of human awareness. Around this core he also researches traditional therapy and psychotherapy, Asian traditional medicine, and qigong healing, seeking the common ground where these disciplines meet the transformation of consciousness.
