Beschreibung
Tomas Valente has spent his life obeying. His son may pay for it.

The nations have given way to the Union of Civic Harmony, a supranational order promising security and an end to division. Its authority reaches into every home. It decides which freedoms are responsible, which beliefs are acceptable and when a person needs correcting.

Tomas has helped make it work. He has defended its decisions and persuaded himself that a decent man can serve an unjust system without becoming part of its cruelty.

Then the Union decides his son needs medication to become the kind of child it can trust. Refusing its help becomes further evidence against the family.

The explanations Tomas offered other parents no longer comfort him. His instinct is to negotiate, appeal and teach his son to comply. But every concession brings the Union closer to the child he is trying to protect.

The Union of Civic Harmony is a literary dystopia about the ordinary obedience on which tyranny depends, and a father who must find the courage to disobey.

For readers of 1984, Brave New World and Prophet Song.
