Hugh Lofting (1886-1947) was a British author and illustrator best known as the creator of Doctor Dolittle, the kindhearted physician who learns to speak with animals. Born in Maidenhead, England, Lofting studied civil engineering and worked in Canada, West Africa, and the United States before serving in the British Army during World War [...] idea for Doctor Dolittle began in letters Lofting wrote to his children from the trenches. Rather than describe the horrors of war, he entertained them with stories about an extraordinary doctor and his animal companions. These tales became The Story of Doctor Dolittle, published in 1920, and were followed by a successful series of imaginative adventures.Lofting's books are remembered for their humor, warmth, and deep sympathy for animals. His work helped establish Doctor Dolittle as one of the most recognizable characters in children's literature, and his stories continue to appeal to readers through their sense of wonder, adventure, and compassion.
