John Stewart Williamson, known by his pen name Jack Williamson, was an influential American science fiction writer, often referred to as the "Dean of Science Fiction." Born on April 29, 1908, in Arizona Territory, he became a prominent figure in the genre and is credited with coining one of the earliest uses of the term genetic engineering. Throughout his career, Williamson explored themes of technological advancement, human evolution, and the potential of science. In the early stages of his writing, he also used pseudonyms like Will Stewart and Nils O. Sonderlund. His contributions to science fiction were vast, and his work influenced generations of writers.
