The judge Ivan Ilyich Golovin has spent his life in the pursuit of wealth and status, devoting himself obsessively to work and often neglecting his family in the process. Leo Tolstoy (1828-1910) is one of Russia's greatest novelists and a social dramatist who rejected his upbringing as a member of the nobility. He regarded the theatre in particular as a means of education the populace away from the moral degeneracy, brought about by the squalor of Russian peasant life.
