Sidney Turner's The Kennel Encyclopaedia (1910), Arthur Craven's Dogs of the World (1931) and Walter Hutchinson's Hutchinson's Dog Encyclopaedia (1935). They catch the breed at the moment of its making: the working earth dog of Skye and the western Highlands, sent in after fox and vermin among the rock cairns that gave it its name, granted its own register by the Kennel Club in 1912 after the Skye men objected to it being called a short-haired Skye.
