"Leave me alone, Mum!" "Go away, Dad!"

These might be sentences that you often hear as the parent of a teenager, but they might also be indications that your child is depressed. This is a more common problem than you might think, as around 10% of teenagers are estimated to experience some form of depression or persistent low mood.

If you are concerned that your child might be depressed, this book will tell you what to look out for and help you to support them in their recovery.

Written by two experts on depression in young people, this guide presents the facts (and the misconceptions) about depression, and provides strategies to help your children overcome their problems, based on Cognitive Behavioural Therapy (CBT) techniques that have been proven to work.

The companion volume Am I Depressed And What Can I Do About It? is a book that your children can use themselves.

PROFESSOR SHIRLEY REYNOLDS is a depression expert who has conducted years of research on depression amongst young people. She is the director of the Charlie Waller Institute at the University of Reading and is also past President of the British Association of Behavioural and Cognitive Psychotherapy.

DR MONIKA PARKINSON is a clinical psychologist and child mental health expert who has worked clinically with children, young people and families at the University of Reading, for the NHS, and in her Berkshire private practice. She has contributed to large treatment research trials and regularly provides teaching, supervision and training.
