Beschreibung

The Soviet Navy that faced the German onslaught in 1941 boasted a mixture of modern warships, often built with foreign technical assistance, and antiquated warships from the Tsarist era that were modernised for the conflict.

Some Soviet naval vessels saw limited involvement in the war against Finland in 1939-1940, but the main action occurred after the German invasion, when these destroyers escorted convoys, fought battles against other destroyers and the deadly threat posed by attacking aircraft, and provided fire support for Soviet troops. Über den Autor

Alexander Hill is professor of military history at the University of Calgary in Canada, and specialises in Soviet military history from 1917 to 1945. He has published a wide range of books and articles on the history of the Red Army and Soviet Navy, including The Red Army and the Second World War (2016), Soviet Partisan vs German Security Soldier (2019) and The War Behind the Eastern Front: The Soviet Union, 1941-1945 - A Photographic History (2021).
