Jane Austen (1775-1817) was an English novelist whose works of romantic fiction earned her a place as one of the most widely read and beloved writers in English literature. Her realism, biting social commentary, and masterful use of free indirect speech have granted her novels enduring historical and critical [...] in Steventon, Hampshire, Austen lived a relatively quiet life within a close-knit family, which provided the sharp material for her keen observations on the British landed gentry. She published four novels during her lifetime-Sense and Sensibility (1811), Pride and Prejudice (1813), Mansfield Park (1814), and Emma (1815)-all originally released anonymously "By a Lady." Her final two novels, Northanger Abbey and Persuasion, were published posthumously in 1818. Today, her works remain literary masterpieces, continually adapted for film, television, and theatre worldwide.
