Beschreibung

This book provides detailed guidance and tips on using ultrasound and other non-invasive techniques for inserting central venous catheters. It also offers advice on the available equipment, manoeuvres for accessing the venous system, and techniques for evaluating tip placement. Moreover, it provides a complete view of the prevention, diagnosis, and management of catheter-related complications (infection, thrombosis and dislodgment) and instructions on catheter care and maintenance. A hint at emerging technologies and techniques for central venous cannulation is also included.

Central venous access devices have become a fundamental tool in daily clinical practice, especially in ICU settings and in the management of oncology patients, where all physicians are expected to know what, when and how to place such devices. In addition, oncology patients need these devices in the early stages of active treatment and in the end phases for palliative measures.

As of today, totally implantable venous access devices are considered safe, reliable, and effective for administering chemotherapy and parental treatment, with a low morbidity and complication rate.

Primarily focused on illustrating practical and operative instructions, this book will be an invaluable tool for many professionals, including oncologists, anaesthesiologists, radiologists, surgeons, registered nurses, nurse practitioners, nutritionists, physicians and physician assistants.

During his career at INT, Dr. Lanocita brought innovation in Radiological Oncology, such as contrast-enhanced ultrasound in interventions, Ultrasound Vein punctures for CVC and Radioembolization as trans-arterial treatment of Hepatocellular Carcinoma—founder of the Peripheral Inserted Central Catheter (PICC) team at his Institute.

He is the Principal Investigator of a group developing an interventional modality suite with the EU-funded consortium IMAGIO.

He serves as a board member in the Ultrasound section of SIRM (Italian Medical Radiology Society).

Massimo Lamperti, MD

Professor of Anesthesiology at Case Western University (Cleveland, Ohio, USA) and Chair of the Anesthesiology Division at Cleveland Clinic Abu Dhabi. Before joining Cleveland Clinic Abu Dhabi, Dr. Lamperti was a Consultant Anesthesiologist at the National Neurological Institute Besta, a quaternary neurological centre in Milan, Italy. He completed his fellowships in the US and UK.

Dr. Lamperti brings vast experience in anaesthesia and critical care. His main clinical field is neuroanaesthesia and neurocritical care in acute brain-injured patients. In the last ten years, he became one of the top researchers in point-of-care ultrasound in critically ill patients. He developed an international training course for ultrasound-guided insertion of vascular accesses. Dr Lamperti is a peer reviewer of many internationally indexed journals in anaesthesia, critical care, paediatrics and neurosurgery.
