Douglas Smith was born in San Juan, Puerto Rico in 1959. When hedied unexpectedly in 2018, he was working at Guilford College in hisnative North Carolina. Before his death, he had published a chapbookof microfictions, Judgments, and had had poems in such journals asThe Gettysburg Review, The American Journal of Poetry, Hayden's FerryReview, Cimarron Review, Lake Effect, Roanoke Review, The SouthCarolina Review, and Mid-American Review. A posthumous collection,The Ceremony of Opening the Mouth: The Poetry and Prose of DouglasSmith, is forthcoming from Hermit Feathers Press.
