Take to the seas as you tell your own pirate story, charting the voyage of your pirate captain from Bedroom to Treasure Island.
Follow the prompts to think, tell, write and/or draw your own very pirate adventure.
This adventure book is aimed to encourage children and young people to get creative and become the great storyteller they were born to be.
Pirate Perils: Chart Your Own Adventure is the first in Imagination Unleashed's Storymaker series.
The book is full of carefully crafted prompts and activities to encourage children to get as creative, silly, funny and imaginative as possible whilst crafting their own, continuous story from their bedroom to treasure island.
Unlike other story prompt books, this book isn't full of ideas for different stories, it's full of prompts sequenced to help young people craft their own coherent narrative, from start to finish. Each prompt is designed to give just enough stimulus to get children thinking and spark their ideas without limiting their imagination.
For many prompts there are also drawing activities so children can illustrate their ideas.
Ways to play:
There are many ways to 'play' Pirate Perils. For older children, the book can be a 'solo' role playing game, where they read through the book by themselves and write down and draw their answers in the book. For younger children (although we find older children like this way just as much) the prompts can be read to them, with the child then saying their response to the prompt.
We find that the social interactions of reading the prompts and having children verbalise their responses is the most fun. You can even use Pirate Perils for group play, by reading the responses out to a group of children and having them all discuss their answers and drawing their ideas on their own paper.
Pirate Perils has been designed to support children develop their reading, writing and oracy in an engaging way, where the emphasis is on being as imaginative as possible. There are no wrong answers, no need to be historically accurate, and maximum marks for absolute silliness.
Why is the age range so large for Pirate Perils?
The age range for Pirate Perils is so large mainly due to the potential for social play using the prompts. We've play tested the book with children from the age of 3 to 14 and found they've all enjoyed the freedom it gave them to craft incredible stories.
