"For me," writes Michael von der Schulenburg in his memorandum on the 80th anniversary of the UN Charter, "the UN Charter and its call of 'Never again war' are a very personal matter. I have spent the greater part of my professional life with the United Nations in war or conflict zones around the world and have witnessed much heartbreaking suffering. In the process, I often found myself feeling helpless, even though it should have been my duty to help. That is why I feel so connected to the UN Charter and hope that, through my commitment to the Charter, I can help, if not to prevent, then at least to somewhat reduce in the future the human casualties caused by wars and armed conflicts."The present interview can be read as a companion text to Michael von der Schulenburg's memorandum. - It aims to make a small contribution toward restoring our confidence in the Charter of the United Nations and its principles.
