One of the most important exams in training of the surgeon is the certification exam, also known as the Board Exam. It is mentioned at most weekly educational conferences in residency training programs, and many examinees feel overwhelmed by the amount of material to prepare. The first edition of this text, published in 2006, represented the first major text of its kind from a major medical publisher to cover the topic of the Oral Boards in Surgery. The second edition, published in 2014, added several important surgical topics, included up-to-date medical information, and provided a "Summary" section at the end of each topic.

This third edition provides an up-to-date review of the surgical topics covered, with several new topics added. "Answers" to the "Curveballs" posed under each subject heading have been added, and flow charts help guide the examinee's decision-making process and provide a structure for learning the material and answering the questions posed.
