Orrie Hitt (1916-1975) was an American author best known for his prolific output of mid-twentieth-century paperback originals, crime novels, and pulp fiction. Working at high speed and with a strong command of the commercial paperback market, Hitt wrote stories centred on desire, ambition, jealousy, betrayal, and the pressures of ordinary lives pushed toward moral compromise. His fiction often explored the darker side of small towns, working-class settings, domestic arrangements, and romantic entanglements, giving his books a direct, unsentimental quality that remains closely associated with vintage American pulp [...]'s novels are valued today by readers and collectors of noir fiction, crime paperbacks, and mid-century popular fiction for their blunt prose, fast pacing, and willingness to examine appetite, weakness, and consequence without literary pretence. His work belongs to the same paperback culture that produced hardboiled crime, adult pulp, and post-war noir, making titles such as Ladies' Man part of a broader rediscovery of neglected commercial fiction from the 1950s and 1960s.
