Thomas Marra received his Ph.D. from the California School of Professional Psychology (now Alliant International University) in 1981. He received a California State Scholarship to attend the University of the Pacific, then a California Fellowship to obtain his graduate degree at CSPP-San Diego. He entered the US Army in 1980 and completed his post-doctoral residency at Walter Reed Medical Center in Washington, DC. He was the 17th Infantry Division Psychologist in Monterey, California before going in private practice there, where he practiced for 35 years. He was active in outpatient, inpatient, and partial hospitalization programs. He was the founder and Clinical Director of the Monterey Psychiatric Health Facility, which received Joint Commission on the Accreditation of Healthcare Organizations with Commendation (only 2% of hospitals receive commendation status, let alone in their first year of operation). The inpatient facility was one of few in the United States owned and operated by psychologists. He received many awards for his advocacy in psychology by the California Psychological Association, where he was Chair of Committees, member of the Board of Directors, and on the Executive Committee of the Board. He is a Fellow of the American Psychological Association and Life Long Member. He is the author of Depressed & Anxious and DBT in Private Practice. He was on the Board of Directors of the Oklahoma Psychological Association. Dr. Marra has lectured widely in the US, and has presented internationally. He is currently working on social media to highlight how people can manage moods and regulate emotions, to reach an even larger audience.
