Livingstone's Mythic Status Was Multifaceted: Protestant Missionary Martyr, Working-Class "Rags-To-Riches" Inspirational Story, Scientific Investigator and Explorer, Imperial Reformer, Anti-Slavery Crusader, And Supporter of British Commercial and Colonial Expansion. Neil Livingstone (1788-1856) and his wife Agnes (née Hunter; 1782-1865) had seven children, the second of whom was him David began working at the cotton mill of Henry Monteith & Co. in Blantyre Works when he was ten years old.
