Beschreibung
Sociolinguists and lawyers will find insight and relevance in this account of the language of the courtroom, as exemplified in the criminal trial of O.J. Simpson. The trial is examined as the site of linguistic power and persuasion, focusing on the role of language in (re)presenting and (re)constructing the crime. In addition to the trial transcripts, the book draws on Simpson's post-arrest interview, media reports and post-trial interviews with jurors. The result is a unique multi-dimensional insight into the 'Trial of the Century' from a linguistic and discursive perspective.

Zusammenfassung

The first linguistic analysis of 'The Trial of the Century', which took place with the participation of enormous defence and prosecuting teams, and which was watched on television by a fascinated general public.

Multi-dimensional: the author uses the 6 million-word corpus to draw out the various discourse techniques and the effective language use of participants in the trial.

As well as the trial itself, the author draws on Simpson's post-arrest interview, media reports, and post-trial interviews with jurors

Forensic linguists and discourse linguists will find this a rich source of data and analysis of power relations reflected in the discourse, to use with their own research and with their students ; law students and practising lawyers will use this as a vivid study of courtroom interaction and technique.
