This edited volume stems from the international conference "The Battle of Arausio (105 BC): A European History", held in Orange in September 2022. It brings together twenty contributions devoted to a major yet long-neglected military event: the Roman defeat at Arausio. Occurring at the height of the so-called Cimbric Wars (113-101 BC), this battle - deadlier even than Cannae (216 BC) - remains poorly understood, partly because it is known primarily through the biased perspective of pro-Roman ancient sources. The volume offers a state-of-the-art overview of recent research in archaeology, history, and anthropology concerning both the context of the conflict and the peoples involved. Discoveries at the Lampourdier site and the work of the Arausio 105 Collective Research Project have significantly renewed scholarly perspectives, moving beyond the simplistic image of a "barbarian invasion" to explore the social, political, and territorial dynamics of Celtic and Germanic groups.

Structured in three sections, the book examines the historical context of the conflict, the ancient narratives that shaped its memory, and the broader European significance of the battle. Without claiming to offer a definitive interpretation, it represents an important step toward re-evaluating a pivotal moment in the history of Rome's relations with southern Gaul.
