These essays were originally broadcast as a series of Thomas Davis lectures. The authors provide an introduction to the prose tales of ancient Ireland. Through their translations of these heroic sagas, a picture emerges of the worlds of the mythological cycle, with stories of the pre-Christian gods, the Ulster cycle of tales of great warriors, the Fenian cycle of inspiring noble youth, and the kingly cycle in which some historical figures have been vested with the immortality of legend. Contributors to the text include: D.A. Binchy, R.A. Breatnach, James Carney, Nora K. Chadwick, David Greene, Gerard Murphy, M.S. O'Brien, Brian O Cuiv, Mairin O'Daly and E.G. Quin.

Über den Autor

Myles Patrick Dillon (1900-1972) was a renowned Celtic and Sanskrit scholar from Dublin, Ireland. He studied at Belvedere College, Mount St Benedict, and UCD, where he pursued classical languages, then Celtic studies, introduced to Sanskrit by Osborn Bergin. With a studentship in Celtic studies, he journeyed to Berlin, Bonn, Heidelberg, and Paris, earning a doctorate from Bonn University in 1925. Dillon lectured in Sanskrit and comparative philology at TCD and UCD, leaving for the University of Wisconsin's chair of Irish in 1937. Later, he served as a professor at the University of Chicago and Edinburgh, and a senior professor in the School of Celtic Studies, Dublin Institute. Dillon published over 200 works and received many honours, including vice-presidency of the Linguistic Society of America, presidency of the Irish Texts Society, and honorary degrees from multiple universities. He passed away on June 18, 1972, and is survived by his wife Elizabeth and their five children.
