Miriam H. Morrill is a retired wildland fire professional, author, illustrator, and educator dedicated to advancing fire communication through nature journaling, visual storytelling, and observation. She is the author and illustrator of Pyrosketchology: An Illustrated Guide to Nature Journaling About the Fire Environment and the essay "Pyrosketchology" in Elementals: Fire (Volume 4 of the Center for Humans and Nature anthology series). During her 27 year federal career with the U.S. Forest Service, Bureau of Land Management, and U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service, Miriam served in a wide variety of field, state, regional, and national roles, including firefighter, wildlife biologist, soil, water, and air specialist, climate change adaptation planner, public affairs specialist, and ultimately California State Fire Prevention, Mitigation, and Education Specialist. Her experience includes participation on numerous national and international fire response and training teams. She has supported fire prevention and investigation training in Jamaica, community wildfire protection planning in Micronesia, the Republic of Palau, and Guam, and has provided scientific illustration and visual communication support for fire scientists and educators in the United States, Canada, and the Netherlands, including contributions to the 2023 Global Fire Science Conference. Miriam has designed and led Pyrosketchology workshops for The Nature Conservancy's Prescribed Fire Training Exchange (TREX) Program, the National Fire Learning Network, Fire Adapted Communities, Fire Safe Councils, the International Association of Wildland Fire, universities, and numerous community organizations. Her workshops emphasize careful observation, curiosity, and visual thinking as practical tools for understanding fire and strengthening relationships with people, place, and the living processes of fire.
