FORT wurde 2008 von Alberta Niemann (geb. 1982 in Bremen, lebt und arbeitet in Berlin) und Jenny Kropp (geb. 1978 in Frankfurt/Main, lebt und arbeitet in Berlin) gegründet. Der zentrale Gegenstand ihrer künstlerischen Arbeit sind alltägliche Objekte des privaten und öffentlichen Raums, die neu arrangiert, nachgebaut oder verfremdet werden. Die Skulpturen, Installationen und Fotografien bewegen sich dabei stets auf dem schmalen Grat zwischen Vertrautem und Unheimlichem, Ernsthaftem und Humorvollem. Bewusst spielt das Duo mit Erinnerungs- und Sehnsuchtsbildern und lässt einen emotionalen Resonanzraum entstehen, in dem die Intimität des Bekannten durch Falltüren ins Beklemmende oder Absurde gestört wird.

Gefördert im Rahmen des Atelierstipendiums der Hessischen Kulturstiftung hat FORT für das Künstlerinnenbuch Ghosts alte Puppenhäuser gesammelt und die verschiedenen leeren Zimmer fotografiert. Jedes Haus trägt eine individuelle Handschrift, ist als Porträt der ehemaligen Bewohner*innen und ihrer Vorstellungen von Eigenheim lesbar. Aber auch spätere Eingriffe wie kindliche Verschönerung und Modernisierung sind in den Fotografien spürbar. So wirken die Puppenhäuser wie Geister der Kindheit verschiedener Generationen und Gesellschaftsschichten und in ihrer Verlassenheit doch merkwürdig lebendig.

"I've got phantoms and ghosts waiting in line." - Phantom Ghost

The focus of their creative practice is on everyday objects from private and public settings, which they rearrange, reconstruct, or defamiliarize, producing sculptures, installations, and photographs that walk the fine line between the familiar and the uncanny, solemnity and humor. The duo deftly plays with half-forgotten visual memories and visions of happiness, lending the works an emotional depth; the intimacy of domestic contentment is marred by trapdoors behind which deep-seated anxieties or the absurd loom.

Funded by the grant of the Hessische Kulturstiftung FORT collected vintage dollhouses and photographed the various empty rooms for the artists' book Ghosts. Each house shows the hand of an individual owner and can be read as a portrayal of the erstwhile residents and their ideas on how to live. But the photographs also capture later alterations such as a child's efforts to embellish or modernize the objects. Abandoned and desolate yet haunted by the ghosts of the childhoods of different generations and social classes, the dollhouses awaken to a peculiar second life.
