Über den Autor
Charlton Miner Lewis (1866-1923) was an American scholar, poet, editor, and professor of English whose work reflected a deep interest in literature, language, and the transmission of classic texts to modern readers. Educated at Yale, Lewis became associated with academic and literary work in English letters and contributed to the study, editing, and retelling of older literary traditions. His version of Gawayne and the Green Knight reflects the early twentieth-century effort to make medieval romance accessible to a wider reading [...] Gawayne and the Green Knight: A Fairy Tale, Lewis reworks the great Arthurian story of Sir Gawayne and the Green Knight into a form that preserves the moral testing, chivalric atmosphere, and symbolic power of the medieval original while presenting the narrative in clear, approachable English. His adaptation belongs to a larger tradition of classic retellings intended for students, families, and general readers who might not encounter the Middle English poem [...]'s work remains useful for readers interested in Arthurian legend, medieval romance, fairy tales, and the educational retelling of classic literature. By presenting the Green Knight story as both a fairy tale and a literary romance, he helped carry one of the central legends of English literature into a form suited to modern reading and classroom use.
