Beschreibung
o the Women of Our Skyless World - Standard Edition is a bilingual Romanian-English work of ethnography, visual memory, and material culture documenting the lives of women in the mining communities of Maramure, northern Romania.
Through personal narratives, family photographs, oral histories, and an extensive visual collection of embroidered wall hangings, the book reconstructs a world shaped by mining, domestic life, community traditions, and the realities of Communist Romania. These embroidered works are approached not simply as decorative objects, but as material traces of women's everyday lives, values, aspirations, and memories.
The book also examines the distance between official representations of women under Communist rule and their lived experiences, bringing together social history and intimate testimony.
At the intersection of ethnography, women's history, textile and material culture, mining-community heritage, and visual documentation, To the Women of Our Skyless World preserves voices, images, and objects from a world undergoing profound transformation. It is intended for general readers as well as those interested in anthropology, social history, gender studies, oral history, textile heritage, Eastern Europe, and the cultural legacy of mining communities.
