Exit the Skeleton by Herbert Adams is a mystery novel that centers on a disturbing crime discovered in an otherwise ordinary setting. The story begins when a murder is found inside a house, shocking the surrounding community and drawing the attention of a determined police inspector. What initially appears to be a straightforward case quickly becomes more complex as unsettling details suggest that the crime is connected to long-buried secrets rather than a simple act of violence.

As the investigation unfolds, the inspector interviews residents, neighbors, and associates of the victim, uncovering a web of strained relationships, hidden resentments, and suspicious behavior. Each new clue reveals another layer of deception, making it increasingly difficult to determine who can be trusted. Adams carefully builds tension by presenting multiple suspects, all of whom seem to have motives rooted in past actions they would rather keep concealed.

By the novel's conclusion, the inspector pieces together the fragmented evidence to expose the truth behind the murder. The title Exit the Skeleton reflects the idea that secrets-like skeletons in a closet-cannot remain hidden forever. Through its steady pacing and emphasis on motive and character, the book delivers a classic detective story that explores guilt, secrecy, and the consequences of trying to escape one's past.
