He is often called "the father of environmental ethics" as an academic discipline and was featured in Fifty Key Thinkers on the Environment (2001). He is author of numerous books including Philosophy Gone Wild (1986), Environmental Ethics (1988), Conserving Natural Value (1997), and Genes, Genesis and God (1999). He is past president of the International Society for Environmental Ethics.
