This scholarly analysis highlights key features of Ukrainian folk traditions reflected in the much-loved fantasy drama by Lesia Ukrainka The Song of the Forest, exploring the contributions by five historical English translations of this famous work to our understanding of Ukrainian culture and identity. The author, Dr Patrick John Corness, an experienced specialist in the theory and practice of literary translation with particular interests in Ukrainian literature, and the recipient of prestigious awards for his previous work, including an honorable mention from the American Association for Ukrainian Studies for his own translation of The Song of the Forest, offers unique insights into a neglected aspect of Ukrainian translation studies.
