Dr. Rainer Nickel studierte Klassische Philologie in Marburg und Berlin und wurde 1970 in Berlin über ein philosophiegeschichtliches Thema promoviert. Der Altphilologe arbeitete zunächst als Lehrer für Latein und Griechisch, bevor er Leiter des Max-Planck-Gymnasiums in Göttingen wurde. Er ist Mitarbeiter der Reihe "Tusculum" und an der Herausgabe der Zeitschrift "Der altsprachliche Unterricht" beteiligt. Er zählt zu den führenden Didaktikern des altsprachlichen Unterrichts.
