"Fresh, exciting, and persuasive." - BookLife

"Mind-bending....and highly recommended!" - The Wishing Shelf Awards

Consciousness in a Nutshell is an award-winning work of creative nonfiction that takes the reader on a psychological trip through the concepts of consciousness, perception, and thought.

A neuroscientist trapped in a room without doors or windows writes a letter to a stranger explaining everything he knows about consciousness-in exchange for one little favor.

Written in the style of creative nonfiction, this semi-autobiographical tale follows two young neuropsychopharmacologists on the verge of publishing a major breakthrough, when one of them (only identified by the name "Ava") winds up missing, and the other finds himself trapped in a room without doors or windows. Faced with impending doom, "James" decides to write a letter to a total stranger explaining everything he and his partner discovered so his entire life won't have been for nothing.

In a sentence, it's a multi-disciplinary answer to the question, "What is consciousness?" told through the vehicle of a story.

In a couple sentences, it's everything worth knowing about the subject, rendered into a psychological thriller. A multimodal conversation that spans the fields of psychology, cosmology, philosophy, coding, neuroscience, and evolutionary biology.

In a few hundred pages, it's Consciousness in a Nutshell: A Psychonautical Odyssey, an undefinable, genre-bending literary tour-de-force featuring 500 unique, citable sources.

Über den Autor
JAY NELSON is an award-winning author, actor, and screenwriter obsessed with three questions: (i) What is consciousness? (ii) Is there an edge of experience? And (iii) How best to explain ecological awareness? After originally getting his start in acting, Jay soon found a love for psychology and explaining the human mind. But after a near-death-experience realigned all of his perceptions in 2013, he started moonlighting in neuroscience, philosophy, and evolutionary biology. He has been called a philosopher, a shaman, and a man of science. But, by his own description, he's a "moderately well-read person who wants to test the limits of human perception." He currently resides in Colorado with his wife and son. You can find him online at [...]
