Henry David Thoreau (1817-1862) was an American writer, philosopher, naturalist, surveyor, reformer, and one of the central figures of American Transcendentalism. Born in Concord, Massachusetts, he was educated at Harvard College and returned to Concord, where he became closely associated with Ralph Waldo Emerson and the circle of writers and thinkers who helped shape nineteenth-century American intellectual life.
