Über den Autor
Joseph Sheridan Le Fanu (1814-1873) was an Irish writer, journalist, editor, and one of the most important authors of nineteenth-century supernatural fiction. Born in Dublin into a Protestant literary and clerical family, Le Fanu was educated at Trinity College Dublin and became deeply involved in Irish journalism and publishing. He wrote novels, short stories, ghost tales, mystery fiction, and sensation fiction, often drawing on Irish settings, family secrets, legal anxieties, psychological tension, and the Gothic [...] Fanu's fiction is known for atmosphere, ambiguity, emotional restraint, and slow-building dread. Rather than relying only on violent spectacle, he often creates fear through suggestion, uncertainty, dreams, documents, inherited guilt, and the sense that ordinary households conceal supernatural or moral corruption. His major works include Uncle Silas, In a Glass Darkly, The House by the Churchyard, and many ghost stories that helped define the Victorian supernatural tale.Carmilla, included in In a Glass Darkly, became his most famous horror work and one of the foundational vampire stories in English. Its portrait of a seductive female vampire, its isolated setting, and its mingling of attraction, illness, secrecy, and terror influenced later vampire fiction, including the tradition that led to Dracula. Today Le Fanu remains central to readers of Gothic literature, Irish fiction, ghost stories, vampire fiction, and the psychological supernatural.
